Cookies
Cookies and browser storage
dailybrief uses no advertising cookies. We use Google Analytics cookies to count visits. In the EU/EEA, UK and Switzerland they are set only after you click "Accept analytics"; elsewhere they are on by default. Wherever you are, you can switch them off at any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page. Browsers that send a Global Privacy Control signal are treated as having declined.
What your browser keeps
To remember your choices, the site saves a few small items in your browser's local storage. They stay on your device, are never sent to us, and are not used to track you.
| Name | What it remembers | How long |
|---|---|---|
briefly-theme | Your light or dark colour theme, if you change it. | Until you clear site data |
briefly-listen-mode | Whether you chose the News reader or the Podcast. | Until you clear site data |
briefly-quiz-<date> | Your answers and score for that day's quiz, shown in the archive. | Until you clear site data |
_ga | Google Analytics: distinguishes visitors. EU/EEA, UK, Switzerland: only after you accept. | 2 years |
_ga_<ID> | Google Analytics: keeps the state of your visit. EU/EEA, UK, Switzerland: only after you accept. | 2 years |
briefly-consent (browser storage) | Your Accept or Decline choice, so we don't ask again. | Until you clear site data |
Analytics
We count visits with Google Analytics using Google Consent Mode: in the EU/EEA, UK and Switzerland, until you accept, it sends only cookieless, anonymous signals and sets no cookies; elsewhere it runs by default and you can decline. Visitors whose browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal are treated as having declined. See our Privacy policy.
Other websites
Fonts load from Google Fonts, and occasionally a story image loads from the publisher's website. Those requests can be logged by those companies under their own policies, but they do not set cookies through our pages for tracking. Websites you open from our links have their own cookie policies.
Removing stored items
Use Cookie settings at the bottom of any page and choose Decline; we then delete the Google Analytics cookies. You can also clear this site's data in your browser settings (often under Privacy, then Site data or Cookies and site data). The site keeps working; it simply forgets your theme, listening choice and quiz scores.
