What is a Claude Skill?
What is inside a skill
Every skill is a folder with a file called SKILL.md. It starts with a name and a short description, then lists the steps to follow. The folder can also hold templates, examples or small scripts.
When Claude uses it
Claude first sees only each skill's name and description. When your request matches one, Claude opens the full instructions and follows them. This keeps Claude fast, because it does not read every skill every time.
What skills are good for
Repeatable work with a set way of doing it: branded documents, spreadsheets with fixed formulas, code review checklists, or your company's writing style. You write the steps once and reuse them.
Key takeaways
- A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file.
- Claude loads it only when the task matches.
- Write a process once, reuse it every time.
